What to Pack for Umrah
Organized by category, in the order most people actually think to pack them — with a few things that are easy to forget until you're already there.
Documents
- Passport (valid 6+ months from arrival) plus printed and digital copies
- Visa confirmation and booking confirmation, printed and saved offline
- Travel insurance details
- A few passport photos, in case anything needs replacing on the ground
Ihram and clothing
- Ihram garments for men — pack at least two sets, since they're worn for days at a time
- A wide, comfortable belt or pouch that works with ihram (no stitched pockets)
- Modest, breathable clothing for women — loose, easy to move in, layerable
- A light jacket or shawl — mosque air conditioning is often stronger than the outside heat suggests
Footwear
- Sandals or slip-ons you can remove and put back on quickly and often — you'll do this constantly for prayer and wudu
- A second, more supportive pair for the walking between Safa and Marwah specifically
Toiletries — unscented matters here
- Unscented soap, shampoo, and deodorant — scented products aren't permitted during ihram, and it's easy to pack the wrong ones without thinking about it
- A small prayer mat that folds compactly
- Basic first aid: blister plasters, pain relief, rehydration sachets
- Sunscreen — genuinely necessary even in cooler months
Practical extras
- A portable phone charger or power bank — you'll use your phone more than expected for prayer times, maps, and photos
- A reusable water bottle — Zamzam water is freely available throughout the Haram
- Some Saudi riyals in cash for the first day or two, before you've located a card-friendly spot
- A small day bag for carrying essentials during the rituals themselves
